Prestbury: an old silk village, its large houses giving way to larger ones.

Prestbury’s main street is also its through-road. The A538 from Macclesfield comes in along New Road, crosses the Bollin on the single-arched bridge of 1855 and runs down The Village, twenty miles an hour through the centre. It passes The Bridge, a riverside hotel in a building of 1626, and the Legh Arms, a sixteenth-century coaching inn. A car waiting on The Village is waiting on the A538; the alternatives are the pay car parks at Shirley’s and Springfields. Trains from the village station run hourly to Manchester Piccadilly, Monday to Saturday; for Euston, Avanti trains leave from Macclesfield, about two miles south. West, the same road leads to Wilmslow and the rest of the Golden Triangle, and by the A34 and the A555 link road to Manchester Airport.

The money arrived in layers. Better communications in the twentieth century turned a silk village into commuter country; since the 1970s new building such as Packsaddle Park, on the grounds of Packsaddle House, has followed. The mark of this century has been the sizeable house demolished and replaced by a much larger one. Since 2020 The King’s School has occupied a new site on the Macclesfield side of the parish. Between October 2024 and March 2025 a series of high-value burglaries investigated by Macclesfield CID took in homes in Prestbury as well as Alderley Edge and Macclesfield.

A protective survey of a rebuilt Prestbury house looks at what the rebuild changed: new gates and glazing, cameras that stop at the hedge line, an alarm still set for the old floor plan. For the window a family is known to be away, away-day property watch puts a presence on the house. Security drivers take the A538 west for Manchester Airport and meet the London trains at Macclesfield. Many households here need nothing beyond the survey and the alarm brought up to date.

An illustrative scenario

An evening on The Village should end with the car drawing up as the table stands, not idling on the A538 for an hour beforehand. That is the standard we work to.
