Manchester runs to two clocks that rarely align. MediaCity out at Salford Quays keeps a steady flow of broadcast talent and touring names moving between studios, hotels and after-parties, most of it quieter than the coverage suggests, while the AO Arena and Co-op Live keep the wider touring circuit passing through most weeks of the year. Then there’s matchday: when Old Trafford or the Etihad empties out, the city fills with tens of thousands of people who are, depending on how you look at it, either the best cover a principal could ask for or the easiest place to lose someone. The Deansgate and Spinningfields circuit runs its own version of the same tension — glass towers over Victorian warehouses, rooftop bars that fill from seven and don’t empty until well past midnight, every table within sight of every other. Manchester Airport sits twenty minutes from most of the city’s money — Hale, Bowdon, the new apartments along the Irwell — which is convenient until you remember convenience runs both ways.
