From the United States
Armed private protection is unlawful in Great Britain, and a visiting team is no exception: an officer who carries at home works here unarmed, as every private protection officer in Britain does. What professionals do instead is advance work, route choice and positioning.
American citizens have needed an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) since 8 January 2025. It costs £20 and lasts two years, or until the passport expires if that comes first. Farnborough, Biggin Hill, Luton and Stansted all handle business aviation through dedicated FBOs. Farnborough and Biggin Hill close overnight, so the departure time is worked back from the arrival window.
London is five hours ahead of New York and eight ahead of Los Angeles for most of the year — an hour less for two or three weeks in March and one at the turn of October and November, when the two countries change their clocks on different Sundays. A driver who has only worked on the right should not learn the left in London traffic; a UK security driver takes the wheel. The emergency number is 999, and 112 works too.
From Europe
Since 2 April 2025, nationals of every EU country except Ireland, and of Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, have needed an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to visit the UK. They also need a passport: national identity cards stopped being accepted for EU, EEA and Swiss visitors, with limited exceptions, in October 2021. Rail and ferry operators now check permission automatically before anyone boards.
For visitors arriving by Eurostar, UK border checks take place before boarding, in Paris, Brussels, Lille, Amsterdam or Rotterdam. Passengers step off at St Pancras International into a public station, so the meet is planned for a busy concourse rather than a private terminal. A family bringing its own car and driver across the Channel meets traffic on the left and clockwise roundabouts, with the driver sitting on the kerb side; for London itself, a UK security driver who knows the city is the simpler arrangement.
Most of continental Europe is an hour ahead of London all year, because the clocks change on the same weekends. A European visitor already knows 112; it connects here as it does at home, alongside the British 999.
From Asia
Holders of Japanese, South Korean, Singaporean, Malaysian, Bruneian and Taiwanese passports, and of Hong Kong SAR and Macao SAR passports, need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA); a Taiwanese passport must carry the holder’s identity card number. Holders of mainland Chinese and Indian passports, among others, need a Standard Visitor visa instead. One household can span both, and a nanny may need a visa where the principal needs only an ETA.
Traffic keeps left in Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and India, so drivers from those places are on the familiar side of the road; drivers from mainland China, South Korea or Taiwan are not. Singapore and Hong Kong are seven hours ahead of London in the British summer and eight in winter, Tokyo and Seoul an hour further, Mumbai four and a half or five and a half.
Visits from the Gulf and the UAE have a page of their own, and Arabic-speaking officers can be arranged on request.
Beyond the first postcode
An itinerary might centre on Mayfair, Knightsbridge and Belgravia, then reach outward: a day in Oxford or Windsor, a weekend in the Cotswolds, a few days in Edinburgh or the Lake District. The same person stays accountable wherever the itinerary goes.
