Darlington: a railway town, and a quiet county around it.

Darlington is a market and railway town — the birthplace of the passenger railway, a station on the East Coast Main Line that puts London inside two and a half hours, a compact centre around the market square. Around it, south Durham and the Tees valley turn rural quickly: country houses, farms and the villages toward Piercebridge and the Dales, where the money is settled, agricultural and thoroughly private.
